Pig Beach & Edges of Ailey
Boy did I have a weekend in New York City. It was my husband’s birthday and even on a “lay low” year, we did a lot: Friday happy hour at Champers, followed by champagne at Compagnie, pizza at Lucia Alimentari, Saturday the Whitney (more below), West Village strolls, a quick beer at Beer Garage, lunch at Via Carota, mid-day nap, cocktails at Portrait Bar, dinner at Keen’s, Sunday Citibike to Astoria, beers at Pig Beach (more below), Greek film festival at Museum of the Moving Image, drinks at Mar’s, got Hupo delivery, the end! When I tell you I do a lot, I do a lot. I’ve tried pitching a paid weekly newsletter roundup of everything I do in a week in the city, but so far, it hasn’t come to fruition. Now that you’ve seen the above, would you be interested?
First up, Pig Beach. Now I’m not even sending you there for what I’m sure is some delicious BBQ food, what I’m specifically recommending is the s-p-a-c-e. This place is huge. There’s like four bars, a huge outdoor area, multiple TVs, and at least five different dining rooms. If you want to meet up with a big group of friends and be sure you’ll get a spot, this is the place. If you want to enjoy the crisp fall weather outdoors while enjoying many screens of sports with a football fanatic (ahem, my husband) this is the place.
The new Alvin Ailey exhibit at The Whitney is excellent. To be honest, I kept getting emails and ads for it and was like, this isn’t really my thing. I’m not huge on modern dance, and I just didn’t see the vision. I was so wrong. On Saturday I thought we’d do a quick pop-in to check it out and the second the doors opened I was like, oh shit.
The curators have done an astonishing job incorporating Alvin Ailey’s work, with the work that inspired him, and vice versa. Everything from the layout of the space to the color of the drapes, not to mention all of the breathtaking artwork. I simply can’t wait to go back on a Tuesday afternoon when it’s less crowded and I have more time to take it all in. Signed, the girl who was wrong about the Ailey exhibit.
