Umi Salon and Portale Happy Hour

We’re in the final push to the holidays here in NYC and everything is bustling and busy! Some housekeeping: we’ll be off for the next two weeks to celebrate (party) and rest (not edit podcast episodes) but we’ll be back January 8th with our podcast, Rachel’s Recs and more! This week I’m bringing you the newest salon and somewhere to hit up afterwards. I hope you have a happy holiday in New York City.

My dear friend (and guest of the podcast back in season one), Amerah Underwood, has finally opened her own swanky, gorgeous, mature, stunning salon in Flatiron. There’s a floating fireplace, people! But let’s get to the point: the hair. I say this with no exaggeration, Amerah is the absolute best person for when you don’t know what to do with your hair. I have personally seen her transform no less than four of my close friends. If you want to sit down in the luxurious chair and have someone assess your facial structure, skin tone, and hair texture to tell you what will make you look best, Amerah is that person! She’s been in charge of my blonde locks for 15 years and recently, when I suggested bangs, she was enthused and confirmed they would look great on my thinner front pieces. And then Instagram went nuts for them. Suddenly, everyone was commenting and asking about my bangs. And there’s only one answer (it ain’t me!): Amerah Underwood at Umi Salon.

Portale Happy Hour

You’ve got your new do, you’re feeling yourself, and it’s time to meet up with friends for happy hour to show it off. And just five minutes away from the salon is Portale on 18th St. They’ve got an elevated happy hour Mon-Fri from 5-6:30 pm exclusively at the bar. Have I enjoyed this myself with Amerah after having my hair done? You betcha. The crowd here tends to lean more mature, and I don’t mind that in the slightest. They’ve got great cocktails for $14 and delightful little Italian small bites to go with them. It’s my go-to spot in a neighborhood that can sometimes seem… bare (I’m looking at you Old Navy on Sixth).

Don’t forget you can have a custom New York City itinerary just like this, made specifically for you with our Curated Days!
