<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Bar Veloce & 12th Street Ale House - Bar Velcoce</image:title>
<image:caption>After finishing up dinner at Lil Frankies in the East Village, my friends and I were ready for another round. It was about 11pm, and some spots were so packed we couldn't get in, while others were closing up shop. We stopped at one spot I thought might be good, but they were closed. Then another spot on Second Ave was putting up their chairs. Anxiety ensued: I had to show my friends a good time, I had to prove NYC was still fun! So I ran across the street to Bar Veloce, and they happily let us in. Prime outdoor table on the sidewalk, a bottle of rosé, friends gossiping and laughing, it was basically perfect. They even asked us if we wanted another bottle before last call, but we politely declined.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Bar Veloce & 12th Street Ale House - 12th Street Ale House</image:title>
<image:caption>But that was a mistake. Around 1:45am, we realized we indeed wanted another round and spotted 12th Street Ale House across the street with its door flung open. Now, this isn’t a bar I typically spend a lot of time in, but they had drinks and music and a crowd! (Don’t let anyone convince you New York isn’t still partying, they’re going to the wrong places.) We stayed there for another hour or so, though who can say for sure, I don’t really remember much. Except for the young man at the bar who hit on me, I do remember that. And for that, and all of the above, I thank you, Bar Veloce and 12th Street Ale House.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Rashid Johnson at the Guggenheim & The Frick - Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers at the Guggenheim</image:title>
<image:caption>I did a double whammy this weekend and hit up two uptown museums on Saturday. My first stop was the Guggenheim for the new show from Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers. I’ve been lucky enough to see his work before and was so excited when they announced this. It was as great as expected! The survey of his work starts from his earliest photography days all the way to the most recent work he’s made this year. Everything from video to painting to sculpture sprawls throughout the spiraled Guggenheim. The most effective of the works are the dioramas or sculptures that tell their story loudly. But my personal favorite is his recent paintings. They allow you to linger, they’re mature. I could stare at some for an hour. If only an Italian tourist with a screaming three-year-old wasn’t in the way. A great reason to return on a Tuesday afternoon!</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Rashid Johnson at the Guggenheim & The Frick - The Frick</image:title>
<image:caption>The Frick is back and open in NYC! It also happens to only be a 17-minute walk from the Guggenheim, so you can hit both on the same day. Now, New Yorkers have been waiting with bated breath for the return of this beloved museum. And with that comes limited tickets and lines. But! What if I told you about a little thing called membership? (I really wish I had some sort of affiliate link…) Hear me out, tickets to The Frick are $30 for adults and if you sign up for their dual membership, albeit with auto renewal, the grand total only comes to $120. If you plan on going at least twice, it pays for itself. And you get guaranteed entry! So, Saturday I bought a dual membership, headed there with my husband, and (I’m sorry) walked by the long standby line and went right to the desk for my tickets. I was then transported to a magical, European oasis in the heart of the city. Vermeer! Manet! Rare coin collections! If, like me, you want to feel like you’re strolling through an aristocrat’s gorgeous 18th-century summer home, this is the spot for you.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Kanyakumari & Vesuvio Bakery’s Rainbow Cookie - Kanyakumari</image:title>
<image:caption>Just last night I went to Kanyakumari with guest of the podcast, dear friend, and small business owner, Amerah, on a whim after she did my hair. We got there around 9:30 and it was only a 10-minute wait! For a “Best New Restaurant” pick from NY Mag, not bad. We wound up taking the bar instead of a table because do you know me at all, and proceeded to stuff our faces with the most delicious coastal Indian food. Seriously, every bite we were like, “Damn, ok, this is out of this world.” If your palate can’t handle the spice, this might really be out of your world, but there were more than enough tamer options. The fried idli and dosa were standouts for me, but my dining partners loved the squid and goat too. Oh! And the cocktails were fabulous too. Gooooo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While out on my blissful, sunny Saturday stroll this weekend, my husband and I popped into Vesuvio bakery to get an iced coffee and tea. While I approached the line I immediately spotted the rainbow cookies. I’m not a huge sweets person, let alone in the middle of the day after just having brunch, but they looked very appealing. As I waited by turn I overheard this woman raving about them. How she was addicted to them, how she had to stop eating them for her summer bod. I had to get one. Now, these aren’t your average rainbow cookies with cloyingly sweet jam and red dye. They’re more balanced, and have a slight almond flavor that doesn’t taste artificial. It was excellent. When I ordered it I told my husband I’d split it with him but I wound up eating the entire thing all to myself on our walk. If you’re looking for a little treat or pick me up while strolling down Prince St next weekend, get this rainbow cookie!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Previous guest of the podcast, Madame Vivien V, is bidding farewell to their weekly Wednesday night party at Joyface (no drama!) You’ve got two more Wednesdays to catch this iconic show at an amazing venue, and boy, oh boy, is it fun (re my 3am night last Wednesday). Madame always puts on the most high-intensity, fun, loud, danceable show and the intimacy of Joyface makes it all the better. I’m sure there’ll be lines for these last two performances but if you get there around 1030 you’re most likely to get in. Go dance your asses off!</image:caption>

<image:caption>As I mentioned, the sun is out! It’s the perfect time to stroll your neighborhood, pop by the local bodega, and get a couple of bunches of flowers to spruce up your apartment. Now, I never want to speak negatively about a local biz on They Had Fun, but I will say I recently popped into a cute little floral shop and decided to have my man character moment a creta e bouquet with one of the works and randomly chose tiny little stem ater tiny little stem and then this person rang me up, and it was 90 dollars. I was gobsmacked! No diss on them, lovely flowers! But last week, I bought three bunches from my bodega for $30 and made two little arrangements by myself, and that was money well spent. A little cheery bodega arrangement sitting on myself brings me immense joy as we enter this beautiful spring in NYC.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Practice Room & Vineyard Spritz - Practice Room</image:title>
<image:caption>First up is a workout class I am currently obsessed with, Practice Room. It’s a hot Pilates sculpt fusion thing, but emphasis on the word HOT. This class is fucking hot as hell and I love it. If you’re a New Yorker like me who, god bless us, wants everything to be as hard and best and hot as possible, you will love this class. It’s also owned by two New York women and isn’t some big bro-y chain (I think you know exactly who I’m talking about). As with all classes, the teacher matters, but even with the least exciting ones, I’ve still enjoyed being in the room sweating my ass off.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ok, you’ve sweated out all the toxins, so why not put some back in?! Enter my fav drink of the moment, the Vineyard Spritz at Wooly’s. I’m sure Wooly’s is great, but to be fair, this rec is for the drink. I’ve only sat at the bar once, and the drink was the star of the show. It’s a low-ABV take on an Americano with the inclusion of muddled Concord grapes. Trust me, the grapes, rather than adding sweetness, add an earthy taste from the skins that round out the drink. It’s the exact type of beverage I could have 10 of in less than an hour. Add in their prime outdoor seating, and this just might be the spot for our upcoming 60-degree evenings!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you can’t make it to our party but are looking for something fun to do this weekend, may I recommend all & sundry for their happy hour? That’s right, their happy hour runs every day, even on weekends. And it gets even better because it's a fancy happy hour with $18 Champagne! Yes, $18 is still a lot for a drink, but when this stuff runs $25/glass at any other time, it’s a good deal. Plus, all & sundry is on West 58th Street, so for this neighborhood, it's a great deal. The space is so cute, like a brownstone lingering in Midtown; it’s really quite unassuming for being right around the corner from Columbus Circle. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to go after work or before seeing a show, this is the spot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Previously, I’ve discussed my five fav pizzas in the city, and Mano’s was featured, but this time I want to give them an explicit shoutout because I've been eating so much of their damn delicious pizza. As you guys know, I eat pizza every Friday for Pizza Friday™️ and must have had Mano’s at least 4 of the last 6 Fridays. We had friends over this past Friday, got a pie, and then we couldn’t stop talking about how good it was the rest of the night. Even the next morning, when you do your little hangover group text, a couple of them were still talking about how they couldn’t stop thinking about the pizza! Mano’s is finally getting some much-deserved attention (number 4 slice in America) but I haven’t noticed a dip in quality or crazier lines. If anything, it’s gotten better. How good is this pizza? When we had our holiday party in December, we got a bunch of pies and a Margherita for the vegans. Readers, the Margherita was the crowd favorite. No cheese! The crowd favorite! It’s so good.</image:caption>

I’m talking bike rides, walks, stoop hangs, Citi Bike rides… I encourage you to do all the things. Do you know that it’s going to be 60 and sunny in NYC on Saturday? SIXTY AND SUNNY?! NYC is collectively going to lose its damn mind, and I can’t wait to be a part of it. I’ve already cleared my calendar all day Saturday and plan on heading into Manhattan to see what happens. I know, we all know, this is a tease. But all the more reason to savor it while we got it! Feel free to send me a DM of you doing shots with your friends near an open window, I promise it will bring a tear to my eye.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Heartbeat Opera & Hundred Weight Ice - Heartbeat Opera</image:title>
<image:caption>I had the pleasure of seeing Heartbeat Opera’s Salome this weekend and loved it. The bad news: this show has already ended. The good news: you can make a plan to go see their next show in May! I’ve been a fan of Heartbeat for a while now; I think I saw my first show of theirs ten years ago at some weird Bushwick space. They enliven opera to new audiences, perform in interesting spaces, and perhaps most enticing of all for new fans, their shows aren’t long. So, if you’ve always wanted to check out the opera but have been deterred by lengthy showtimes, you can attend confidently, knowing their average run time is 100 minutes! And while Heartbeat is starting to get some much-deserved attention, small avant-garde opera companies can always use more funding and patrons. These are the exact types of things we are lucky enough to have as New Yorkers and should support.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’ve reached the section for those of you who want to stay home! So, if you're not going to head out into this great, magnificent city, you might as well have one hell of a cocktail at your apartment. Enter, Hundred Weight Ice. Hundred Weight is the ice distributor for all your favorite cocktail havens (Dutch Kills, Per Se, Leyenda), and they can be a part of your at-home bar too. To be honest, I don’t know how often they’re delivering to normies (me), but I emailed them and asked if they would, and they said as long as I hit the minimum and paid a delivery fee ($105 all in), they would. And now I won’t shut up about this ice! I’m asking all my friends to come over, I’m telling strangers at bars, I’m having cocktails every night I’m in. And while a hundo seems a little crazy to drop on ice, it is a lot of ice. Plus, we’re spending $20-$25 on one cocktail at a bar, so we might as well have the best at home too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Criterion’s “New York Love Stories” & The Perfect NYC Snack Plate - New York Love Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>I recently signed up for a Criterion Collection subscription and was smitten to see one of their current featured collections, “NY Love Stories.” It’s exactly what you’d think: a curated collection of exceptional rom-com leaning films set in New York City, aka jackpot! The collection includes some of my personal favs: Moonstruck and Kissing Jessica Stein. But I’ve also loved finally watching some that have been on my list for so long, like Crossing Delancey. This collection is the perfect balm to warm your cold New Yorker heart over these last few remaining winter weeks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What’s a cozy night in without a snack plate and bottle of wine? And in this theoretical recommendation universe, I’m collecting all my favorite things from throughout the city. I’m starting by picking cheeses at Eataly Flatiron, then stopping by the Union Square Greenmarket to get the best bread in the world from She Wolf and fresh veggies for crudités. Then why not, I’m heading on the train to Sahadi’s on Atlantic Ave. to pick up their obsession-worthy spicy hummus. After that, it’s back to my hood to peruse the shelves at Ridgewood Pork Store or Parrot Coffee to pick up 100 little things I don’t need but love like cornichons, $14 fig jam, spicy peppers, olives, and more. And of course, once I get home, I’m opening a bottle (or three) from Astor Wine. While this would be quite the trek and are all my favs, hopefully, it inspires you to go support the local businesses in your hood, assemble some snacks, and watch a movie that reminds you why you love it here so much.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You’re going to start your lovely afternoon off at Sculpture Center for their newest show, Tableau Vivant, from Àlvaro Urbano. I’m still so floored by the space at Sculpture Center. Every time I walk in, I’m in awe, but this show adds a wow factor. And the story behind the show has an added New Yorker element that makes it extra special. This work originally started as Atrium Furnishment from New York artist Scott Burton. A public artwork in a semi-public space in Midtown, it unfortunately had to be torn down in 2020 for reasons that are unclear. And then stick with me here, some foundation (or some rich person) took it over, and Urbano asked if he could repurpose it for his piece in Queens. The pieces have been dismantled and incorporated with scenes that evoke spring in Central Park. It feels so all-encompassing and thoughtful, I loved walking through the room. You could almost feel the dialogue between the artists. I wonder what Burton would say to Urbano if he were around today to witness his take?</image:caption>

<image:caption>After finishing your stroll through the basement of Sculpture Center, and you must visit the basement, it’s time for cocktail hour. Even with the 30-degree temps, I was able to walk across the Pulaski Bridge to Greenpoint, and I think you can too! I’m the first person to complain about the cold (see: my intro) but it’s amazing how that view of the city makes it all ok. Back to the drinks, you’re heading to neighborhood favorite, Leroy’s. It’s a great go-to spot that’s practically a living room for some of my friends who live in Greenpoint, and I love it too. And lucky for you, they have happy hour on the weekends! A great happy hour that only features cocktails, all priced at $10. I went with the Invisible Gin, and my husband had the Old Fashioned, both executed perfectly. We snacked on some homemade chips at the U-shaped bar and talked about all the plans we had in mind for summer in the city. Then we considered another round but decided the walk to the G would be too cold, even 30 minutes later. I’m fine, I’m fine ‍♀️.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m not really sure if all the City Chemists are related or independently owned, but (after you’ve donated) if you still want to check out one of their other locations, the one in LIC can’t be beaten. It is massive. Like truly, it doesn’t feel like it’s in the city. They have everything from fancy haircare products to skincare to wrapping paper, aka everything a proper pharmacy should. They even have Byredo, fancy. And it’s ever so conveniently serviced by three train stops at Court Square so there’s no excuse to not check it out this weekend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you can’t make it out to Queens but are still looking to peruse in Williamsburg, may I recommend Northside Pharmacy? It’s a tiny little shop but what they lack in size they make up in variety. All those fancy products your friend told you to buy while in Paris? They got em. The prices here reflect the “ever-changing” neighborhood, but I don’t mind. I’m a sucker for those 389 little things that they have at the cash register. Whenever I go on a trip, I head to Ph7 to get my nails done, and before or after, I stop into Northside to buy something I don’t need. Last time they got me with hangover tablets and mini fancy toothpaste. I realize I just made it to the end of recommending two pharmacies and not a word about prescriptions. If you don’t know why, this probably wasn’t for you ☺️.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I popped into Zimmi’s on Friday night before heading to a play (ok, I was still doing some stuff) and was lucky enough to get two seats at the bar. Admittedly, we just had drinks and snacks, but both were excellent. And an extra special shoutout to the convivial bartender who was both chatty and a superb drink maker. As my husband and I enjoyed the extra garlicky winter ratatouille and cocktails, I noted that Zimmi’s reminded me in a way of Prune, my all-time favorite New York restaurant that I miss to this day. The small dining room at Zimmi’s had the same casual air. The plates leaned Mediterranean-ish but not to the book, just like Gabrielle Hamilton’s. And most importantly, everything was delectable. I can’t wait to return with a group of friends to order more and multiple bottles of wine. Zimmi’s feels like the perfect place for a night like that in New York City.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Umi Salon and Portale Happy Hour - Umi Salon</image:title>
<image:caption>My dear friend (and guest of the podcast back in season one), Amerah Underwood, has finally opened her own swanky, gorgeous, mature, stunning salon in Flatiron. There’s a floating fireplace, people! But let’s get to the point: the hair. I say this with no exaggeration, Amerah is the absolute best person for when you don’t know what to do with your hair. I have personally seen her transform no less than four of my close friends. If you want to sit down in the luxurious chair and have someone assess your facial structure, skin tone, and hair texture to tell you what will make you look best, Amerah is that person! She’s been in charge of my blonde locks for 15 years and recently, when I suggested bangs, she was enthused and confirmed they would look great on my thinner front pieces. And then Instagram went nuts for them. Suddenly, everyone was commenting and asking about my bangs. And there’s only one answer (it ain’t me!): Amerah Underwood at Umi Salon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You’ve got your new do, you’re feeling yourself, and it’s time to meet up with friends for happy hour to show it off. And just five minutes away from the salon is Portale on 18th St. They’ve got an elevated happy hour Mon-Fri from 5-6:30 pm exclusively at the bar. Have I enjoyed this myself with Amerah after having my hair done? You betcha. The crowd here tends to lean more mature, and I don’t mind that in the slightest. They’ve got great cocktails for $14 and delightful little Italian small bites to go with them. It’s my go-to spot in a neighborhood that can sometimes seem… bare (I’m looking at you Old Navy on Sixth).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holy shit, this show! You’ve probably seen or heard about Nicole Scherzinger’s jaw-dropping performance in this Broadway revival and I’m here to let you know, it’s all true. Maybe like me, you didn’t really have an opinion of Nicole Scherzinger. I knew she was a pop star and famous, sure, but I’d guess many people questioned her casting because of those reasons. But my god, was she sensational. When I tell you I was weeping, I was weeping. Actually, after we left the theatre my husband was like, “Are you ok? I’ve never seen you like that.” That’s how good she was. Now comes the time when I tell you, this is an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. While they’ve done a great job with production design, this just isn’t my type of show in general. So, really, I think that should convince you all the more to get tickets ASAP.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Sunset Blvd. & Joe Allen - Joe Allen</image:title>
<image:caption>The ongoing issue of where to eat pre or post-theatre in Times Square plagues us all. Sometimes I try to convince myself that I can just eat near Flatiron and quickly jump on the train a few stops, but it always leads to anxiety about curtain time. I’ve found the path of least resistance is to just give in to it all and eat nearby. Enter (you see what I did there), Joe Allen. A Theatre District institution open since 1965, this is a place I actually enjoy going to. It’s my go-to anytime I’m in the area, and you’d never guess it; my favorite spot is at the bar. But I’ve also been with large groups at a table in the back, with parent’s friends in the front, and so on. Their American-leaning menu isn’t intimidating and their drinks are cold and served swiftly. Plus, the room just feels so great: buzzy, brick-lined walls, filled with people who care about live performance still. It’s the perfect spot to grab some martinis before heading off to sob in the dark with 1,700 strangers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What I like to do is take something special I’d like to frame (a note that came with a bouquet of flowers, a menu, sentimental pictures), head to pick up a premade frame, and then take everything to a framer for custom matting! I start by picking out a reasonably priced frame from Blick on 4th Ave because they have good quality frames and aren’t Amazon. The frames are usually around 20-30 bucks, and everyone working there is eager to help. I also like to get a frame that’s pretty oversized compared to the size of what I’m framing. I think the large matte really makes it feel elegant and look more expensive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Frame in hand, I’m headed three minutes west to Dryden Gallery and Framing. I’ve been going here for years, and the guys are always open to discussing color options, sizing, etc. I politely explain that I’d love a custom matte for my piece, pull out my frame, and they do all the measuring and hard work! Maybe I’m getting the special treatment (?) but they always fully frame and wire it for me too. The whole thing usually comes out to around $70, and you really can’t beat that for a personalized gift that looks so luxe. So, if you have a napkin lying around from your favorite place to grab drinks with friends or an old recipe card from a relative, go get that shit custom matted!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you want to do a spa day up right, look no further than the 5-star experience at Hotel Fouquet’s. First and foremost, the massages fucking ruled. The second my best friend and I exited our treatment rooms in states of pure bliss, we both looked at each other and said, “Oh my god, that’s the best massage I’ve ever had”. Shout out, Renata! Now on top of that, the surroundings are luxe. There’s a giant heated jacuzzi and lounge area, steam room, sauna, relaxation lounge, and decadent locker room. The price tag reflects the aforementioned but once a year you deserve a spa day with your bestie.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After trying to decide what to make my second recommendation, I called up my best friend to ask her what she’d choose out of everything we did. She wondered if the carmelized onion ravioli at Lilia would be allowed. And after looking through the archives, I have never recommended Lilia, one of my favorite restaurants in the city! Probably because this is the type of place that really needs no recommendation (they’re continuously fully booked and notoriously hard to get into). But sometimes it’s good to be reminded or to confirm that a place with that much hype is as good as you’ve heard. We ordered soooo much from the menu, my favorite being, and always will be, the Rigatoni Diavola. But as I mentioned, the crowd favorite was the caramelized onion ravioli. I can say, you really can’t go wrong with anything from their seasonally changing menu. And let’s give credit where credit is due: Lilia was the only place, on a 5-day trip, that remembered to give my dear friend a candle for her birthday. ☺️</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Pig Beach & Edges of Ailey - Pig Beach</image:title>
<image:caption>First up, Pig Beach. Now I’m not even sending you there for what I’m sure is some delicious BBQ food, what I’m specifically recommending is the s-p-a-c-e. This place is huge. There’s like four bars, a huge outdoor area, multiple TVs, and at least five different dining rooms. If you want to meet up with a big group of friends and be sure you’ll get a spot, this is the place. If you want to enjoy the crisp fall weather outdoors while enjoying many screens of sports with a football fanatic (ahem, my husband) this is the place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The new Alvin Ailey exhibit at The Whitney is excellent. To be honest, I kept getting emails and ads for it and was like, this isn’t really my thing. I’m not huge on modern dance, and I just didn’t see the vision. I was so wrong. On Saturday I thought we’d do a quick pop-in to check it out and the second the doors opened I was like, oh shit. The curators have done an astonishing job incorporating Alvin Ailey’s work, with the work that inspired him, and vice versa. Everything from the layout of the space to the color of the drapes, not to mention all of the breathtaking artwork. I simply can’t wait to go back on a Tuesday afternoon when it’s less crowded and I have more time to take it all in. Signed, the girl who was wrong about the Ailey exhibit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Walking Manhattan top to bottom - Walking Manhattan top to bottom</image:title>
<image:caption>This has been a Rachel’s Rec before but they’re my recs, I can do whatever I want! But really, it’s because walking the entirety of the island of Manhattan is so goddamn fun. I actually did it for the fifth time last weekend and it was just as great as I remembered. Very important: stretch, wear good shoes, drink water. I know, I sound old. But the truth is you‘re going to be walking around 14 miles (40k steps), you gotta take it a little seriously. Ok, on to the fun stuff… the neighborhoods! the people! the sights! the food! This is why you’re doing this walk. In one day you’ll get to see all of New York and all the people that make this city so great. I love to stop along the route for snacks and drinks (duh). If you happen to make the same sort of timing my husband and I did, you’ll be downtown just in time for happy hour. We had a fabulous one with some snacks and cocktails at Mostrador right before ending at the water near the Staten Island Ferry. And then to celebrate our completion, we walked over to one of the oldest bars in the city, Fraunces Tavern, for a final cheers. If you’ve always wanted to do the walk, now is your chance!</image:caption>

<image:caption>What’s more New York than having a cheese guy? A cheese guy that delivers to your door! I first met Tommy Cheese (I have no interest in learning his government name) at a popup he was doing at Frog. He was offering up some delicious cheese boards to enjoy with wine in their backyard. After the event, I started following him on Instagram and noticed he offered home delivery in Bushwick and Ridgewood . It’s exactly what it sounds like: every week he DM’s his wide-ranging cheese selections, you let him know what you want ($30 minimum), and he bikes your cheese over to you. As someone who does nightly apertivo hour and doesn’t have a cheesemonger within a 20-minute walk, without exagaration, this has changed my life. And don’t worry if you don’t live in one of those neighborhoods, you can still enjoy Tommy Cheese’s offerings at one of the many popups he does in the city. Check his Instagram for more info.</image:caption>

I was lucky enough to get invited to a Vinyl Nights party that was happening there and had a blast. The space is huge and even if skating isn’t your thing, they have DJs and food and a bar. I gotta say, the best part of the place is the people. Every type of New Yorker is there. Every age, every demographic, everyone is just skating around and having fun. It was electric. Get yourself some tickets to Xanadu and have fun!</image:caption>

<image:caption>After getting off the L at 1st Ave and slowly strolling our way through the East Village and then the LES, my husband and I eventually landed at Sen Saigon for dinner. I had been wanting to go here since the day they opened but was finally able to dine-in for some of their excellent Vietnamese food. Now is the time when I let you know dear reader, Sen Saigon is a vegan establishment. Don’t let that stop you! This food is flavorful and rich and wonderful (highly recommend the Hue Spicy Noodle Soup). And as if that wasn’t enough, the family running the spot is beyond adorable. The son of the owners couldn’t have been older than nine or ten and was running all the orders out to the tables with a big grin. A doll. Go check out this new Vietnamese spot!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Frequent readers may remember when Caroline from The Locavore took over my recommendations while I was on vacation this summer. Well, this week I’m returning the favor with a highly specific rec you can buy in store at the new Locavore shop on Sixth Ave. If you’re a fan of my favorite NYC movie, You’ve Got Mail, you’ll surely remember a crowd favorite line, “Don’t you just love New York in the fall? Makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address”. Ah, pure poetry from Ms. Ephron. And now you can buy bouquets of newly sharpened pencils thanks to the clever minds at The Locavore! They come in a darling arrangement wrapped in a bow, and with a small note card that has the movie quote on it. They’re the perfect gift for your New York-obsessed, fall-loving, friend ie my husband (shhh I got him some for his birthday)!</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Flushing Avenue bike lane & Subway Time app - Flushing Avenue Bike Lane</image:title>
<image:caption>What if I told you there was a magical, (somewhat) elevated, European-esque bike lane right in the middle of Brooklyn?! Believe it folks. As of late, I have been obsessed with the Flushing Avenue bike lane. Specifically the stretch from the BQE to Navy St. If you closed your eyes, which you definitely shouldn’t, you could almost believe for a moment that you were in Copenhagen or Paris. Bike traffic lanes in both directions, at least 2-3 feet distance from the cars on the street, shrubs and flowers between you and said cars?? It’s a dream. I’ve been going out of my way to take it and you should too!</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - Flushing Avenue bike lane & Subway Time app - Subway Time app</image:title>
<image:caption>Another transit obsession I have currently, the Subway Time app! If you’re like me, you have like five similar train time apps on your phone. But what makes this one different are two things: the times are accurate and you can add widgets to your screen. If you’re the type of New Yorker who likes to plot out your subway arrival times for maximum efficiency, keep reading. Now I’ve already put in the research to test out the train times and they’re spot on. But god damn does it not get one bit better with the widgets! (DO I SOUND OLD) You can add your favorite lines to your home screen and see the next four arriving trains. Oh, the N is 3 minutes and 11 minutes away? Better book it. The next L’s are 2 minutes and 4 minutes? I can stroll. Subway Time is a game changer for this impatient New Yorker. ‍♀️</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Deux Chats & The Wallace Hotel - Deux Chats</image:title>
<image:caption>My time at Deux Chats this week was a happy accident. For about two years my dear friends, myself, and my husband have all said we’d go together to get some seafood towers and martinis. Alas, this never happened. So, this Sunday when my husband and I biked by we decided to sell them out and go alone. Great choice! Not only did we have an outdoor seat with a nice breeze, light music playing, and gorg views of the bridge, but we also found out it was happy hour! And not some trashy happy hour. No, this happy hour had martinis, and oysters, and a beer shot combo with Kronenbourg and Fernet, fancy! You can enjoy this happy hour daily but on Sundays it goes from the perfect day drinking times of 3-6. The vibe of Deux Chats is equally mature, French, and thoughtful. But I won’t judge you if you’re just there for the nice booze.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m so excited that They Had Fun will be partnering with the luxurious Wallace Hotel on the Upper West Side! This was a happy accident that turned out to be a great pairing for both of us. And lucky me, they offered to let me check out the hotel with a suite for my birthday staycation! Now let’s get to the point, was this stay gratis? Yes. Was it still absolutely stunning? Yes! I’m such a hotel snob and The Wallace lived up. Now I know many of you maybe prefer staying downtown or god forbid, in Midtown (which I love for hangs but I’d rather stay elsewhere). But here’s my pitch to you, The Wallace is in the calming, picturesque Upper West Side and only three stops on the 2,3 from the West Village. So go have your fun downtown and then head uptown to relax and luxuriate. I feel so lucky that The Wallace is the first hotel we get to partner with to offer our Curated Days to their guests so they can have as much fun as we do. Thank god it wasn’t something like the Holiday Inn near the airport.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Right now I’m craving long strolls with my husband- no plans but many options. And the perfect way for us to start a day like that is at 17-year East Village caffeine institution, Abraço. I’ll be honest here, do I drink coffee? No. I’m a tea gal! But, my husband recently got his European citizenship, so let’s just give it to me? We‘ve done the research and I trust his taste. But don’t just trust us, this spot has consistently been ranked as one of the best espresso pulls in town. And with that pedigree can come a bit of a line. But it’s not the type of line that makes you want to yank your hair out (see: Lafayette spiral croissant thing line). Instead, it’s a bunch of New Yorkers hoping for the same thing you are: a no-fuss cup of strong café. No oat milk to be found.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And if you want to continue your perfect little afternoon, stroll on over to a few galleries in the East Village. While many have been closed or showing group shows for the summer, they’re coming back strong for fall around September 4th. Head east from Abraço down Avenue A, to stop by mini gallery, Match. They have two small viewing rooms and a show that opened this week, I can’t wait to check it out. After that, take a leisurely 15-minute walk over to one of the Karma locations on East 2nd Street for their newest show that opens on the 7th. Maybe after you’ll stop by a bookshop or get a drink. Who knows really, isn’t that what makes NYC so great?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Volunteering, now’s your time! I’ve been volunteering in New York once a month for twelve years and one of my favorite organizations to do it with is New York Cares. I really believe volunteering is an integral part of being a good New Yorker but it’s also a lot of fun. I’ve done everything from farming a lavender field on Governors Island (pictured right) to delivering meals to homebound seniors to playing sports with kids. They even have equine therapy in Forest Park if that’s your thing. But most importantly, you get out there, meet your neighbors, talk to them, and learn. If you’ve always wanted to get involved now is your chance to give back to the city that has given so much to you.</image:caption>

You can’t beat the gorg views of the city from the top and they have a bar (see what I did there, I got the booze in). You could get off at the Astoria stop and roam through Socrates Sculpture Park. Or you could take it to the South Bronx to meet up with friends. Or you could simply just ride around with no agenda at all taking in the views. Bonus tip: a single ride is $4 but if you buy the 10-pack they come out to $2.75, which is cheaper than the subway.</image:caption>

If you’re a listener of our podcast (and you really should be) you know that I’m a new tennis fan thanks to the US Open. A few years ago, I got tickets on a whim as just a fun New York thing to do and got hooked. The good news: even if tickets to the main events are a little out of your budget, you can go this week to Fan Week when everything is free! And if you do buy tickets for next week, I implore you to make a plan like I do: CitiBike to Corona, stop by a taco truck on 111th St. for cheap eats, buy beers from a bodega to have on the sidewalk, and then walk the extra 10 minutes over to the grounds. A beautiful night in Queens!</image:caption>

I stopped in last week for dinner with friends who were in town and everything from the food, to the suggested wines, to the service, was flawless. On top of that, they’ve got the primo West Village location looking out dreamy floor-to-ceiling windows onto 10th St. They’re also open daytimes. <image:caption>Your request this week was for “new spots in Ridgewood”. And while not technically new, grace land on Woodbine is a recent fav! They’re a mix of vintage clothing shop and tailor service rolled into one, that also hosts pop-up markets with local vendors on select weekends in the summer! A few weekends ago I got a dynamite pink leather vintage moto jacket that I can’t wait to wear. As I always say, everyone’s interest is piqued with Ridgewood- here’s your perfect excuse to go check out a local store and then, yes, you can go to Rolo’s afterward.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I know, I know. But! Even my best friend in the city admitted to me she’s never done Summer Streets (she’s remedying that this Saturday). So, I really have to belabor the point that you need to take advantage of the car-free streets. You’ve got two more weekends to bike, walk, roller skate, stroll, and more from the BK Bridge to the top of Central Park. If you go, I promise I won’t recommend it again next week! Maybe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ever since my return from vacation, I can’t stop craving Champagne. I keep ordering it everywhere I go: Compagnie’s happy hour, The Mulberry with friends, at a bar in Midtown by myself. But I did some digging into the They Had Fun archives, and I’ve never recommended one of my favorite places to drink Champagne, The Crosby Bar. The Crosby Hotel is a five-star hotel located right in the heart of SoHo that is equal parts luxurious and quirky. I love popping into their bar when I’m shopping downtown or after I finish editing at a coffee shop in Nolita. Of course, this atmosphere comes at a price. But it’s summer in New York and you’ve been putting in the work. Treat yourself to a cold glass of French bubbles, you deserve it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The new slice shop from the Roberta’s team is good! I went once a few weeks ago and thought as much but put in the extra “work” to return a second time and confirm it is very good. The crust is charred and the tomato sauce is tart but they really got me with the giant glug of rich olive oil poured on top. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy this pizza is to grab a few slices, head out to the picnic tables on the street, buy two glasses of wine from the bar inside, and you’ve got a nice little al fresco dinner for less than 40 bucks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The frozen watermelon margaritas from Five Leaves are delicious and refreshing on their own but the very important part of this recommendation is “to go”. There’s nothing better than pulling up to the window at Five Leaves and grabbing a few of these margaritas to take to nearby McCarren Park to share with friends! And I know this because I probably get at least one text a week from a friend asking if I want to go grab some watermelon margaritas from Five Leaves and chill in the park. Perfect NYC summer bliss.</image:caption>

While the gallery is currently showing two exhibitions, I’m particularly in love with EUTIERRIA, curated by Kate Mothes. This collection is the work of seven artists and you wouldn’t believe how well the pieces and stories weave together. To best describe the show I’ll let the curator do the talking with a quote pulled from their press release, “self and nature become indistinguishable.”</image:caption>

This is the spot for a special occasion, for a night on the town, for splurging. My husband and I went for his birthday a few years ago and had the best time. Housed in the famed Seagram Building in Midtown, the second you walk in you feel the history of the city, and the luxury. Get dressed up, start with some oysters, sip cocktails, watch table-side preparations, take multiple bathroom selfies, order that bottle of Champagne… it’s Saturday night in New York City baby.</image:caption>

The streets are car-free (!!!) and eight participating museums open their doors for free. I plan to start up at 103rd St. at the Museum of the City of New York, then stroll down to 89th for the Guggenheim (usually $30!), and end at The Met on 82nd St. for some rooftop views.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After you’ve perused some art and strolled the Upper East Side head down Fifth Ave. to check out the Met Opera’s Summer Recital Series in Central Park. Before you enter the park at 72nd St. pop into Marché Madison and Maison du Vin (Madison & 74th) to pick up some snacks and wine for the park. The opera performance is at the Rumsey Playfield and the line can often be ridiculously long, so instead of waiting try what I like to do instead and set up a blanket right outside the playfield. You can still hear all the beautiful singing, enjoy your wine on the grass, stare up at the stars above the city, and remember how much you love it here. All without waiting in line.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My sister went to Pearl Street Restaurant a year ago and was adamant that I check it out. What a dummy I was to sit on that for so long. Last week I had one of the better meals I’ve had in a long time. In fact, one of the best dishes I’ve eaten all year. Pearl Street Restaurant is actually located on Front St. (according to Google Maps) but don’t let that and the unintentionally hidden entrance stop you. This place is small, like 12-seat chef’s counter small. It has an intimacy that leads to genuine conversation, with your fellow New Yorkers and the staff. Chef John offers a seasonal menu focusing on seafood but even I (vegetarian) left satiated. The best dish I’ve had all year? The maitake “farroto” that was a play on risotto with a truffle cream that was still effortlessly light. For my husband’s part, he said that if I wasn’t there he would have “licked the cauliflower cream off the scallops plate”. This is the type of restaurant that reminds you maybe there’s more to Dumbo than that picture everyone’s trying to take. That, and always listen to your sister.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you know me at all, you know I am a biking girlie. I love riding my bike all over NYC but I also enjoy riding a Citi Bike. When the weather turns, we’re talking two rides a day minimum. I know a lot of you are concerned about safety (VALID) but if you can get up the courage, ride with caution in mind and a helmet, it really can’t be beat. You get everywhere in half the time, it’s more fun than sweating on the subway, and when you’re done you just leave the bike behind (hello still being able to get drinks and get home safely). So if you’ve been hesitant to try, now is your time. If you need a partner, message me, I’ll come meet you! (Honestly, why the hell do I not have a Citi Bike affiliate link at this point?!?!)</image:caption>

This unassuming deli on Myrtle Ave. serves some of the best momos I’ve ever had. The sauces! So spicy, so tantalizing. My favorite thing to do is grab the veggie momos for me and a paratha egg and cheese wrap for my husband to go and sit on a bench across the street. <image:caption>Recently someone asked me what my favorite bar in Ridgewood is, the pressure! And while I love sitting at the bar at many restaurants in the neighborhood, my favorite actual bar is Sundown. They’ve got inexpensive wines by the glass, negronis on tap, and a killer happy hour every day, but I think my favorite thing is the windows that open right onto Forest Ave. Dare I say it adds a European feel? The spot is just so tiny and cozy, it’s my favorite.</image:caption>

And the perfect spot for you to enjoy a classic glass of wine is Aldo Sohm on West 51st St. Yes, midtown! I dare you. I love Midtown. <image:caption>After getting off the L near my house I wanted to get home as quickly as possible and saw one single CitiBike waiting for me. Alas, as I approached someone else swooped in to grab it and I sorta grunted. He looked back, apologized, and offered me the bike, which I of course, refused. Then we discussed who was going further and my bike guy quickly exclaimed, “Rock, paper, scissors?” So there we stood on the corner, one, two, three... he won, and off he rode victoriously to Halsey. It was a perfect NYC interaction and I couldn’t help smiling the whole cold walk home.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - 2 New York Mini Stories - Croatian Supper Club</image:title>
<image:caption>Last weekend my friend who was visiting, my husband, and I headed to a sixth birthday in Astoria. After a few hours, we felt like we put in our time and were ready for a local bar. The party host made a recommendation of a bar down the street, The Quay’s, so we headed there and proceeded to meet two new pals at the bar. After offering up their extra seat, we started talking and drinking and became fast friends. Gus, the born and raised New Yorker, owned a laundromat around the corner and graciously let my friend charge her phone there while we all continued drinking. After some time they mentioned they were headed to a Croatian members-only supper club down the street, and that we should join. We told them we’d think it over and had one more round before unanimously deciding, there was no way we couldn’t go to this dinner. So, we walked 15 minutes to meet them, thinking we’d stumble into this elite, closed-door experience. In reality, we showed up and there were four guests total at the restaurant, including our new friends… and it was perfect! We proceeded to share bottles of Croatian wine, they recommended dishes, my husband and Gus talked in Greek, it was the New York City night you hope for. Once again proving that saying yes and following the route the city lays out for you is usually for the best.</image:caption>

The rain makes its way into the open-air room and you can feel the stone and artwork changing. You can even smell it. As you make your way up to the second floor, you can gaze out the windows at the calming sculpture garden while you hide from the rain. I’ve experienced this museum during many seasons, but this might be my favorite time to go.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rachel's Recs - WiFi in Parks & Bud Smith’s Substack - WiFi in NYC Parks</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that more than 50 New York City parks have free WiFi? Once I found this out, I was off on my bike, laptop in backpack, to try it out in Central Park. The map on the park’s website just showed a little icon for the location but I figured I’d arrive at the wide-open Sheep’s Meadow to blazing-fast internet and get some work done in the spring weather. On arrival, I realized the free WiFi was actually coming from the Le Pain Quotidien and I’d be lucky to get a weak signal while sitting on a little patch of grass as close as possible to the cafe. But you know what? That’s ok! I finished the work that I could and decided to finish my other non-internet work under another tree. So, sure, maybe go try out some wifi in an NYC park. And maybe it’ll work, or maybe it won’t, and maybe you’ll still have a gorgeous day out in the city anyway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This week, Bud Smith’s Substack took me for a ride and blew me away. If you’re not following, I implore you to subscribe immediately. Bud Smith is the author of the fantastic, Teenager, and shockingly, said yes to being a guest on my podcast back in season one when I had no business having him on. His stories are always so enthralling. You’re immediately hooked and they just keep unraveling and turning. This week’s, The Upanishads, hits all those notes and more while Bud narrates walking aimlessly around New York City. A must subscribe for any lover of great writing and NYC.</image:caption>

Surprisingly, Bar Blondeau, their sister bar on the 6th floor with sweeping views of the city, has not. And most importantly, along with those views comes a stellar $11 martini from 5-7pm. Eleven. <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Wine Week at Quality Branded - Wine Week</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s finally Wine Week at three of the Quality Branded restaurants in NYC! I have been waiting patiently to bring you this recommendation and lucky for me, your request last week was “happy hours, always”. Well folks, here it is. The “happy hour” of all happy hours, 10 wines for $20. TWENTY DOLLARS. Two weeks a year Quality Branded runs Wine Week at lunch and this one is April 8th-12th. There are still reservations available! Participating restaurants are Smith & Wollensky, Quality Meats, and… umm, Bad Roman. Choose at your own risk. But let me tell you my game plan I’ve done for three years and I suggest you do too: snag a Friday res around 1:30/2 pm, take a half-day, and ride that glorious boozy lunch into the weekend! Last year my husband and I did lunch at Quality Italian, picked up a half bottle of Champagne from the wine store after, walked around Central Park with it, headed downtown to meet friends, and kept the night going. Honestly, I don’t know why Quality Branded doesn’t publicize this a bit more. Go get your reservations!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Whitney Biennial is here and even though Jerry Saltz had some thoughts, I enjoyed it! The way the magnitude of pieces and installations hover over you and enclose you in the work was grand. One of the most engrossing was Once Again . . . (Statues Never Die) by Isaac Julien, spanning across five screens in one room, it speaks to Black artists’ legacies in modern history and I found myself unable to leave the room. You have until August 11th to check out this Biennial.</image:caption>

And it did not disappoint. The drinks, the swanky room, the service! The service was impeccable. They quoted a short wait but really for a Friday around 7pm, I can’t believe they got us in. Across the East River in Bushwick, this bar delivers a chill atmosphere and stellar cocktails. It’s got a bit of a summer on the Mediterranean vibe, but in the coolest vintage way possible. They have giant booths perfect for celebrating with friends and a happy hour Monday-Friday. I highly recommend the Jackson Heights (tequila, coconut, cardamom) that I recently enjoyed at the bar!</image:caption>

Open since 1989, this midtown restaurant was/(is?) the hot spot for power, media lunches but should be on your radar for martinis at the bar now! Because you can actually get a seat at the bar. The best show I saw last week was Bad Posture at Praxis. This show from Luciana Pinchiero plays with the idea of body, sculpture, female identity, and there’s a heavy influence of Greek and Roman sculpture. I’m not doing it justice, but the show was fabulous!</image:caption>

<image:caption>While Fanelli’s is certainly very well known and can sometimes even be overcrowded- it has been downright easy to get into as of late. Something about an old, dark bar hits right during winter and for that reason, Fanelli’s has been on my mind. And the last two times I’ve shown up, there’s been seats at the bar ready for us! Don’t let the crowds of SoHo scare you off, there might be a seat and a warm drink ready to welcome you in.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a NEW YORK movie. Set between the city and South Korea, this film from Celine Song, is truly a love letter to New York. There’s a mini love triangle and young love but what you’re really here for is all the sweeping, yet quotidian shots of our city. And my god, the performances. I’ll just say this, the two male support actors had a scene near the end that left me in tears. Want to take the NYC feeling up a notch? <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Holiday Month: Week 2 - Bank Street</image:title>
<image:caption>Start off at the corner of Bank and West 4th and head east down Bank. There’s classic Christmas garland, contemporary colors, flame-lit lamps, and everything else you could want to see on a little stroll through the New York City streets!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Holiday Month: Week 2 - Waverly Inn</image:title>
<image:caption>Once you’ve reached the end of Bank, you’ve landed at the charming Waverly Inn. They’ve also got their holiday lights on the tree outside inviting you in. Now this spot can get crowded, so why not time it out to get there around 5:15 as soon as the 5 o'clock seating goes to their table? Then you’ve got the warming fireplace near the bar all to yourself…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Holiday Month: Week 1 - It’s A Wonderful Life</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most classic holiday movies, It’s A Wonderful Life, is playing at IFC Center from December 8th to 25th! If you’ve never seen this movie, let me tell you, seeing it in one of the best theatres in the city is really a treat. I saw it two years ago and loved the entire experience. It’s a great holiday activity in the city that won’t be overrun with a certain type of crowd (ahem, tourists ☺️) Go get your tickets!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Holiday Month: Week 1 - John’s</image:title>
<image:caption>Before or after you’ve seen your holiday movie, why not head to one of my favorite pizza spots in the city, John’s. Just a cute four-minute stroll from IFC, it’s the perfect pairing to your NYC evening. The place is no frills and the pizzas are exceptional! Of note, John’s only serves pies, and isn’t that just great? Because it means you get more pizza!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Budget Month: Week 4 - Decades</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m so in love with the new happy hour at Decades in Ridgewood! Monday- Friday, 5-7, and the must-try order is the arancini and martini (how cute) for $18. But another big sell is that they now offer square slices at the happy hour for $4! Decades usually only serves whole pies so this is your chance to grab a seat at the bar, a martini, and a delicious slice that won’t break the bank.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Budget Month: Week 4 - Riding the bus</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ll just say it, I love riding the bus. I know several friends, who have lived here for years, who have never taken the bus! Now is your chance. Ok, you can not have any sort of immediacy with the bus, you’re on their time. But if you can just enjoy that, and accept it, you will enjoy yourself! You can see the whole city outside the window, your phone works the entire time, and you get to interact with your fellow New Yorkers. Get out there and just jump on a bus, it’ll only cost you $2.90.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Budget Month: Week 3 - Leather Spa</image:title>
<image:caption>Ok, I really love getting a shoe shine. Am I alone in this? While I hate the cold weather, once it turns I start to get excited that I can pull out my boots and get a much anticipated shoe shine at The Leather Spa in Grand Central Station. It’s the little things sometimes, ha. Something about the entire experience is very relaxing, almost massage-like? Add in the element of it being in the basement of Grand Central Terminal and it really feels like a special New York experience. Plus, prices start at $12, cheaper than a pedicure and you come out looking like you bought a brand-new pair of shoes!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Head just a few avenues west and you’re at the NYPL on Fifth Ave. This is one of the most gorgeous rooms in the city and best of all, free to everyone. I love that they have the most magnificent rooms on the third floor and that they're dedicated entirely for quiet work. It truly is so special that we get this as New Yorkers. Even if you don’t have work to do, just stroll in some time and take a look around, guaranteed to shake you out of a bad mood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve been meaning to check out Nudibranch’s happy hour for a while and I’m so glad I finally made it. Not only is it a great happy hour, not only are the people who work there lovely, but they also have it on the weekends! They have $10 cocktails, wine, and snacks. I didn’t get to have any food but I will be back. I had the best time there and met a whole group of people that I just pushed myself onto and they wound up buying me a round of drinks, budget indeed!</image:caption>

I had this spot saved on my map for a while and was just waiting for an excuse to be in the neighborhood. I got a spicy and wonderful roti roll with cauliflower, potatoes, and chickpeas and it cost a whopping $6.50. It also weighed about seven pounds. <image:caption>Once we made it down to the Village and had walked off some carbs, it was time to try another spot I had saved, Shingane. These are kinda like a waffle batter that you choose your filling and we got the sweet, chocolate nut. They also press them with this darling NYC logo, which I of course found very cute. It came on a (worthless) stick, proceed to eat with your hands and enjoy. At $7 it was the most expensive thrill of the day and entirely worth it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rachel's Recs - Budget Month: Week 1 - Hiptix at Roundabout Theatre</image:title>
<image:caption>As if the walk wasn't enough, we rounded out our evening with a Broadway show. I had bought tickets to I Need That, starring Danny Devito, months ago and didn’t even remember the wild deal I got. Apparently, I signed up for Roundabout Theatre’s Hiptix promotion, which offers $30 tickets to ages 18-40. Thirty. Dollars. For tickets to a Broadway show? If that’s not a deal in NYC, I’m not sure what is. I highly suggest you sign up, for free, and be on the lookout for email blasts.</image:caption>

It’s a Chipotle-style lineup: you get to pick your base, but believe me, get the saj, then you pick fillings protein, etc. I got curried chickpeas, arugula, pickled cauliflower, sumac onions, tahini sauce, and a green sauce too. <image:caption>This week you asked for a good coffee shop with WiFi and I gave you one, but what I really suggest you do is go work in a fancy hotel lobby! While a coffee shop or the library can be good, this is so much more of a pleasurable experience. So, I’m recommending The Walker Hotel on West 13th St. The lobby is just lovely, they have a fireplace and a few booths. Most of all, no one bothers you. And! After you finish working, they have a happy hour that goes from 4-6 at their restaurant, Society Cafe! A great way to spend your day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You might know this two Michelin-starred restaurant for their tasting menus but did you also know they offer a luxurious cocktail-tasting experience? I went recently to celebrate my anniversary with my husband and had a great time! I was looking for something to do that wasn’t your typical date night but still food and beverage related, and this turned out to be perfect. You get four custom cocktails (they usually do 5 ) and you get light bites with each course. It really is such a fun atmosphere where you’re talking with the bartender and other guests, and way more relaxed than any other tasting menu I’ve ever done. So if you‘re looking for something for a special occasion, go check it out!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our second fancy-ish open for this week is a little more well priced for everyone and that is the new apero hour at Le Crocodile. This is really such a stunning restaurant in the Wythe Hotel and they recently added a happy hour so anyone can go check it out now! You can expect to find light bites, nice wines, and some cocktails. So if you’re having one of those nights when a $4 beer just won’t cut it, go head over to Le Crocodile!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you’ve never had a chance to go to The US Open in New York City, why not make this your year?! It truly is soooo much fun and one of the best sporting events in the city. And, this week, starting August 22nd, the preliminaries are free and open to the public! That’s right you can head to Flushing Meadow Corona Park and watch some of the best players in the game for free. Of course, you could always buy some luxury tickets and drink your face off in Honey Deuces too… up to you!</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s finally back, my favorite event of the year, Summer Streets! And it’s even bigger and better. This year it starts at the Brooklyn Bridge and goes all the way to 125th Street. And, that’s just the Manhattan one! There was a Queens Summer Streets this last weekend and there’s still a Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island to come. Get out there and bike or walk the car-free streets, it’s pure bliss for a New Yorker.</image:caption>

I love this bar and they just celebrated their 12 year anniversary, congrats to them! The frozen drinks are what draw the crowds- last week they had a frosé with Aperol floater ‍♀️ but the prices are also great. <image:caption>Last week I had the pleasure of attending the opening of this year’s summer program at Mmuseum and it was a spectacle in the best New York way: about 400 people crowded in the street, an opera singer announcing the show, music blasting from a speaker, and confetti raining down. Watching this all play out surrounded by fellow New Yorkers, in this tiny alley, just felt like such a “city in the summer” experience. As mentioned, this gallery is located on Cortland Alley and it’s housed inside of an elevator shaft. It’s tiny and only three people can be let in at a time, but I think it’s worth you trying it out for the experience. I’m sure if you arrived Sunday around 4pm it couldn’t be that crowded.</image:caption>

I had the pleasure of attending one of his sandwich tours recently and I was wowed. While the food, stops, and history are all great, it’s Ben’s wild enthusiasm that really is the star of the show. You can tell he has a genuine passion, not just for sandwiches (), but for the people who make them and for this great city. <image:caption>First up was your request for “somewhere fun to go dancing” and Joyface in the East Village is a personal fav. I even went there with a big group of friends after our season three premiere party! Rest assured, we danced and had a blast until three in the morning. While they have great music and a disco ball to boot, they also have excellent drag shows from Brooklyn’s own, Madame Vivien V.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dear God what do they put on these potatoes?! I can’t even accurately describe the sauces- one spicy but somewhat sweet sort of peanuty sauce and the other an aioli or mayo, all covered in raw white onions... They’re ridiculously good and I have to get them every time I go. While everything at Rolo’s is great, these potatoes are a MUST ORDER.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I really did have an entirely different Rachel’s Rec ready to go for you this week but I’m telling you, when I saw this show, I knew I had to share it! Local Objects features artwork bordering on the line of object or art, and lucky for us, we don’t have to decide. They want us to view the work with an open mind. I absolutely loved many pieces but on top of that, the INCREDIBLE views from the fifth and sixth floor are with the trip alone to this gallery located in deep Bushwick. Of note, their elevator is currently not working.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your request this week was, “Where’s pizza Friday?”. And first of all, how did you know I celebrate Pizza Friday™?! Haha. But yes, for nearly a decade every Friday, my husband and I have had pizza. But of course, Fridays in NYC are always the best. This week we were lucky enough to have our friends with a nice backyard invite us over for pies from Carmine’s. Truly one of my favorite slices in the city, Carmine’s is located off the Graham L and is delicious. Pro-tip: grab a slice from the slice joint on the left and bring it to sit at the bar on the restaurant side and get a drink!</image:caption>

Lovely, but the line is wild! However, Barano, has got you. They have outdoor seating with a lovely view of the Williamsburg Bridge, Aperol umbrellas that almost give you that Italian experience, and delicious spritzes. Get outside!</image:caption>

There are seven signature locations and twenty-four Open Street locations across the five boroughs, so there’s an opportunity for all of us to enjoy this car-free day. You can walk, bike ride, hang with your friends, whatever you like. The stretch of Broadway in Manhattan from 17th-42nd will for sure be a hot spot and I’ll be there myself enjoying it! Help support your local farmers and get some delicious veggies while you’re at it. We’re so lucky to have access to this in NYC and don’t forget they also accept EBT, SNAP, etc. Local, sustainable, healthy food should be for all New Yorkers. And while I can’t promise you’ll see a celebrity at Jac’s on Bond, I can say I may or may not have seen one there myself ;). But of course, as New Yorkers, we try not to make a big deal of these things… On top of the possible celeb sightings, Jac’s on Bond happens to have a wonderful cocktail program and is run by some of the best people in the biz. <image:caption>This week you requested, “somewhere to get to go drinks now that the weather is turning”, and while I think everywhere is allowed to have to go drinks again(??), one place I can heartily recommend is The Tippler in the basement of Chelsea Market. The only way to enter is from the entrance on West 15th Street, which is actually for the better because you get to avoid all the crowds inside! But once you get down there and order a drink, they can it and seal it so you can head out and get a lovely walk in. Which leads to our second recommendation…</image:caption>

The birthday girl was a born and raised New Yorker, no kids, never married, had her pilot’s license, and had been to all seven continents! These are the type of people you can meet, this is the type of fun you can get into in this town when you just go out and see what happens. I adore spicy food but if you can’t handle it, I’m not sure this is the place for you. The hands-down best dish was the Ema Datsi, spicy peppers smothered in a fresh cheese sauce. It’s also apparently the staple dish of Bhutan, as our waiter said they have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Get yourself to Zhego soon!</image:caption>

She Wolf makes the most incredible bread. Excellent crust, wet dough, true flavor… I could eat a whole loaf in one sitting. Spoiler alert: it’s the only place in the US that carries it. This shop is romantic, full of giant fresh flower arrangements, so special, and offers some fancy candles and perfume. So don’t just pick a fancy place because it’s expensive. You need Vinegar Hill House- located on a far off cobblestone street in Dumbo, you feel special just for finding it. <image:caption>We finally made our way to Huertas last week after talking about it forever. And boy was it worth it! They offer wine, sherry, vermouth and more on happy hour but also, they offer a wonderful selection of snacks at half price. We got olives, cheese and croquettes and everything came with bread and chips().</image:caption>

<image:caption>When asked for a newish wine bar in New York we knew there was one answer: Winona’s. A near-perfect wine because of the food, ambiance, wine and service, we absolutely loved this place and will be returning. Be sure to grab a seat at the bar and lull yourself into pure bliss!</image:caption>

And on Thursday evenings they’re pay what you wish! Seeing the museum at night, and with smaller crowds, is such a great experience.</image:caption>
